Al Marjan Island Ras Al Khaimah: the beach escape Dubai doesn't offer

Roamigo Team March 23, 2026

Al Marjan Island is a group of four coral-shaped artificial islands off the Ras Al Khaimah coast, about 90 kilometres north of Dubai. It's been developing steadily for years, but 2026 is the point where it starts to get serious attention. Several major resort brands are opening properties here, and word has got around that you can get a beachfront room for roughly half what you'd pay on Dubai's Palm Jumeirah.

That's the main draw. Not a specific attraction, not a landmark — just the combination of a proper beach, calmer water than the east coast, fewer crowds, and prices that don't require planning around.

What the island is actually like

Al Marjan is flat, purpose-built, and fairly quiet outside peak season weekends. The islands extend about 4.5 kilometres into the Arabian Gulf and have a total of around 23 kilometres of coastline. There's a beach walk along the outer edge, a marina area with restaurants and a few bars, and a steady line of hotel developments facing the water.

It's not lively in the way that JBR in Dubai is lively. There are no beach clubs packing in a thousand people on a Friday afternoon. If that sounds like a criticism, it isn't. The lack of scene is why people who want an actual beach holiday come here instead.

Where to stay

The options have expanded significantly through 2025 and 2026. DoubleTree by Hilton and Hampton by Hilton have solid mid-range properties directly on the island. Several newer boutique resorts offer better pools and more direct beach access. The big development everyone is watching is the Wynn Al Marjan Island casino resort, under construction and expected to open in 2027 — the first licensed gaming venue in the UAE. Even pre-opening, the anticipation has driven hotel investment around it.

For a weekend trip from Dubai, a beach-facing room with half board can still be found for around AED 500 to 800 per night, depending on the season.

Things to do on and around the island

The beach is the main activity, and it's good. Water sports — kayaking, paddleboarding, jet skis — are available through most hotels and a couple of independent operators on the marina. The water here is calmer than Dubai's open coastline and clearer in the early morning before boat traffic picks up.

Snorkelling from the beach is limited — the sandy bottom doesn't have much reef. Take a short boat trip to the reef areas further offshore for better underwater visibility.

The Suwaidi Pearl Farm is about 30 kilometres south and worth an afternoon. It's one of the few remaining pearl cultivation operations in the Gulf, and the guided tour explains how the industry worked when it was the entire economic base of this coastline. Not a theme park version — an actual working farm.

Ras Al Khaimah city is 15 minutes away by car. The old fort that houses the national museum is small but genuinely informative. The fish market near the old town opens early morning and is one of those ordinary local scenes that feels very far from tourist Dubai.

Getting to Al Marjan Island

  • From Dubai: 80 to 90 minutes by car, depending on traffic leaving Dubai. Taxis cost around AED 200 to 250 one way.
  • There's no public transport directly to Al Marjan. A rental car makes the most sense for a multi-day stay.
  • The road from RAK city to the island is direct and well-signed.

The honest comparison to Dubai beaches

Dubai's beach infrastructure is better — more restaurants, more facilities, more things happening around you. But if you've done Dubai and you want something that actually feels like a break rather than an extension of the city, Al Marjan is the better call. The water is warmer in winter, the pace is slower, and nobody is trying to sell you anything.

Roamigo puts together weekend packages to Ras Al Khaimah that combine Al Marjan beach time with the Jebel Jais zipline or a mountain hike. It works well as a two-night trip. Let us know if you want details.
