I still remember my visit to Al Qudra Lakes on a sunny Saturday, 22nd February. So, I decided to ditch the usual brunch spots and head out to this serene oasis instead. We packed our bikes and set off early, eager to beat the heat and catch a glimpse of the famed flamingos.
Look, getting to Al Qudra Lakes isn't too complicated, but you will need a car or a driver. Our driver, Kareem, took us down the Al Qudra Road, and we arrived in about 45 minutes from Downtown Dubai. Honestly, the journey was pretty smooth, and we even stopped for a quick snack at a roadside café on the way.
And then, we rented our bikes for AED 50 each, which was a steal considering the quality and the scenic routes we got to ride on. But, do note that prices might vary depending on the rental shop and the type of bike you choose. You'll also need to pay AED 20 for parking, so factor that into your budget.
Here's the thing: the cycling routes at Al Qudra Lakes are incredibly well-marked and range from easy to challenging. We opted for the 50km loop, which took us through some stunning desert scenery and along the lakes. I ordered a shawarma and a cold drink from a roadside vendor for AED 15, which was the perfect refuel after our ride.
So, after our ride, we spent some time spotting flamingos and other bird species. The best time to see the flamingos is early morning or late afternoon, when they're most active. We got lucky and caught a glimpse of a few dozen flamingos wading in the shallow waters.
If you're planning to visit Al Qudra Lakes, make sure to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat. You'll also want to download a map of the cycling routes beforehand, as the signal can be spotty.
