The UAE has a mountain, and most people visiting the country have no idea it's there. Jebel Jais in Ras Al Khaimah reaches 1,934 metres above sea level, and on its slopes you'll find the world's longest zipline, serious hiking trails, and a landscape that looks nothing like what you'd expect from the Gulf.
Ras Al Khaimah sits about an hour's drive north of Dubai, and the mountain is another 30 minutes beyond the city. The road up is excellent, cut into the rock face with safety barriers and regular viewpoints. It gets genuinely cold at the top in winter, cold enough that you need a proper jacket, which is an odd experience when you've been sweating in Dubai the same morning.
The mountain has been developed carefully over the past few years, with Ras Al Khaimah positioning itself as the adventure capital of the UAE. It's working.
The Jais Flight is listed in the Guinness World Records as the longest zipline in the world, running 2.83 kilometres from a launch platform on the mountain to a landing pad further down the slope. You reach speeds of around 150 kilometres per hour and fly at heights of up to 1,680 metres. The whole ride takes about three minutes.
It's expensive by UAE standards, at around AED 800 per person depending on the package. The experience is worth it, but book weeks in advance during winter because it sells out. There's also a shorter tandem zipline called Jais Sky Tour if you want something less intense or want to bring children over the minimum weight requirement.
The hiking here is genuinely good, with several marked trails of different lengths and difficulty levels. The most popular is Trail 1, which is relatively flat and gives wide views over the Hajar Mountains and into Oman. It's about 7 kilometres and takes two to three hours at a comfortable pace.
Trail 6 is harder, a steep climb on loose rock that requires proper footwear and some fitness. It gives you the best views on the mountain and almost nobody does it, which means you'll likely have the trail to yourself. Take plenty of water regardless of the season. The sun at altitude is deceiving.
The Highlander hiking event runs every winter, usually in February, and covers the full length of the UAE's longest hiking trail across the Hajar range. If you're a serious hiker, it's worth planning a trip around.
Below the zipline there's an adventure complex called Jais Adventure Peak with a via ferrata route, a tobogganing track, a climbing wall, and a zip line tower for kids. The via ferrata is the most interesting option for anyone who wants to do something physical but isn't quite ready for the full zipline. You clip onto fixed anchors in the rock and traverse a section of the cliff face. No prior experience needed.
The mountain toboggan track is officially called the Jais Sledder, a 1.8-kilometre course cut into the hillside where you control your own speed with hand brakes. It's more fun than it sounds. There's something ridiculous about tobogganing in the Middle East, and the Jais team leans into it. Children need to be over 1.1 metres to ride alone.
1484 by Puro is a restaurant at the top of the mountain, named for its altitude in metres above sea level. It serves reasonably good food with views that justify the drive alone. On cold winter mornings, having a hot breakfast above the clouds is a genuinely good experience. There are also a few smaller cafés at the base area.
The Jebel Jais Mountain Resort opened recently and sits partway up the mountain in a section of the rock face. If you want to watch the sunset over the Hajar range and not drive back down in the dark, staying overnight is a decent option.
From Dubai, head north on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road toward Ras Al Khaimah, then follow signs for Jebel Jais. The mountain road starts from Ras Al Khaimah city. Google Maps handles this route well. There's no public transport to the top.
In winter (November to March) temperatures at the summit drop to around 5°C at night and rarely exceed 18°C during the day. Bring layers even if it's warm in Dubai when you leave. Rain happens. In summer the top is pleasant during the day, around 25-28°C, while Dubai bakes at 42°C.
Roamigo arranges full-day Jebel Jais trips from Dubai, including the zipline booking, transport, and lunch. It takes the logistics out of what is otherwise a complex day to plan independently.
